Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS or SD780 IS - How Do These Family Friendly Pocket Cameras Compare by Wayne Rasku

Canon released two similar cameras in the "family pocket camera" market. They are the Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS and its close relative, the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS.
A very quick glance at the specifications of these two compact pocket cameras shows that they are almost identical. Here are some of the similarities:
Size: 3.4" wide by 2.2" high by 0.7" deep
LCD: 2.5" with 230,000 pixel resolution
Zoom: 3x with very similar focal equivalents
Image Quality: both are excellent for compact pocket cameras
Aperture: not exactly equal but not enough difference to make a case one way or the other
ISO range: auto, or 80-1600
White Balance selection: 6 positions and manual preset
Image Processor: Canon Digic 4
The differences are only in the Megapixels and the video capablility. The Canon PowerShot SD780 IS has a whopping 12 megapixel image sensor, while the Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS has only a 10 megapixel image sensor. If you are a megapixel watcher, this may be enough for you to go for the SD780 IS, but it really is not enough of a difference to base your final decision on.
The biggest difference is in the video capture feature. The Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS has decent video with capacity of capturing 640x480 video at 30fps (frames per second), which is similar to previous pocket cameras. However, the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS has the capability to capture HD video at 1280x720 pixels and 30 fps. This is the same video capability and format as some much higher end cameras.
So, if you want to be able to show your pocket camera video on your HD TV with excellent quality, the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS is the camera for you. The additional 40 or so $$$ is well worth the upgrade in video.
If video is not your thing, then by all means, save the $40 and get the Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS. The image quality for still photos is pretty much identical. Use the money you save to get a memory card for your new family pocket camera. (By the way, you will have to spring for the memory card with the SD780 too, in order to record that great video.)
It's always a good idea to research your purchase before you buy. Don't just walk into your favorite discount department store and pick up the prettiest camera off the shelf because its design will impress your friends. There are some great compact digital cameras being offered. But that is not the case with every camera. Check the ratings from the camera review sites and online stores where those who actually purchased the cameras are posting their evaluations. Some of these reviews will convince you one way or the other about the camera you are considering.
Of course you should always check in at www.digital-photographic-resources.com before making any camera decision.
Happy Shooting!

canon powershot g3 digital camera by bp-511

The Canon PowerShot G3 ($799) is an evolutionary, rather than revolutionary upgrade of the PowerShot G2 battery code bp-511 . But Canon has added more than just bells and whistles. Here's what's new with the G3 np-bg1 :
New DIGIC image processor - noticeable improvement in photo quality, plus faster performance
Totally new 4X zoom lens
New FlexiZone auto focus
Refined body design
Now records up to 3 minutes of video with sound; editable in playback mode
Built-in neutral density filter
Support for wireless flashes
New iSAPS technology
You're probably confused by that last item. iSAPS stands for Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space (what a mouthful). The system is a database of photographic data, which has been accumulated by Canon over the last 60 years. When you press the shutter release button halfway, the G3 canon bp-511 compares the current scene to the scenes in the database, and choose the best settings for that situation.
According to Canon, one of the key advantages to this new feature is a reduction in shutter lag time compared to earlier models like the G2. The G3 spends less time hunting for focus because it already "knows" how far the subject should be based on statistical analysis of other photos shot at the same focal length and light level. Pretty slick!
So that's the iSAPS system -- now learn about the other new G3 bp511 features in our review!
What's in the Box?
The PowerShot G3 has an excellent bundle. Inside the box, you'll find:
The 4.0 Mpixel Canon PowerShot G3 camera
32MB CompactFlash card
BP-511 Li-ion rechargeable battery
AC Adapter / battery charger
Neck strap
Lens cap w/strap
Wireless remote control
USB cable
A/V cable
CD-ROM featuring Canon Digital Camera Solutions and drivers
205 page camera manual + software manual (both printed)
The PowerShot G3 is ready to go right out of the box. The only minor quibble np-bg1 I have is the 32MB memory card. Sure it's a good start, but you should plan on buying a much larger card right away if you want to get serious about digital photography.
The G3 uses the same BP-511 Li-ion battery as its predecessor. The battery has a very respectable 8.1 Watt/hours of power. For the sake of comparison, the EN-EL1 battery used by the Nikon Coolpix 5700 is 5.0 Wh and the NP-FM50 on the Sony DSC-F717 is 8.5 Wh. Canon says that you'll shoot about 750 pictures per charge with 50% LCD usage; you can stay in playback mode for 6 hours on a single charge.
When it's time to recharge, you just plug in the included AC adapter. This same AC adapter can be used to power the camera sony np-bg1 in the studio, or if you're just transferring photos to your computer. Charging the battery takes about 80 minutes.
The downside with proprietary batteries like the BP-511 is the cost ($60) and the fact that you can't use standard batteries (as you can with AA-based cameras) if you're in a bind. That's why I usually prefer cameras that use AA batteries.
The G3 includes a lens cap and strap to protect your lens. I must say I'm happy that everyone seems to be including both the cap and retaining strap these days.
Another nice surprise is the inclusion of the WL-DC100 discount np-bg1 wireless remote control (shown above). You can control the camera in both record and playback mode with this device.
Like the PowerShot G2, the G3 is an accessory lovers dream. There are even some new options available. In the lens department, you can use the WC-DC58N wide-angle converter ($199) to shorten the focal length to 24mm, or the TC-DC58N tele converter ($129) to bring the top end up to 240mm. I tried both of these and was impressed with the results. A 58mm close-up lens ($125) is also available. Note that the LA-DC58B conversion lens adapter ($24) is required in order to use these.
The G3 is compatible not only with EX-series Speedlites, but also the Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX ($750), Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX ($1100), and the Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 ($340).
Other accessories include a soft carrying case and dual battery charger w/car power adapter ($180).
The G3 can also print directly to Canon's CP-10, CP-100, S830D, and S530D photo printers.
The Canon PowerShot G3 is one of the finest digital cameras on the market. It offers robust performance, tons of manual controls, unmatched system expandability, and excellent photo quality. The DIGIC processor has made the G3 one of the most responsive cameras I've used. The playback and movie modes are some of the best out there, as well. The neutral density filter is a nice bonus, but my guess is that the average shooter probably won't use it. But it's not a perfect camera. The redeye and strange (but rare) purple fringing that I noticed were surprising for a camera of the G3's caliber. The diopter correction knob was hard to use, and I didn't care for the view of the lens through the optical viewfinder at wide-angle.
Now for the million dollar question: is the G3 the best 4 or 5 Megapixel camera out there? Guess what, I'm not going to answer. I don't think there is one camera that is best for everyone (I mean that honestly, not as a cop out). The G3 is definitely a contender that goes up nicely against cameras from Minolta, Nikon, Olympus, and Sony. Do your research and you (rather than me) can decide what the perfect camera is for your needs.
If I was a PowerShot G2 owner, I probably wouldn't race out and upgrade. If I was deciding between a G2 and G3, I'd pony up the extra cash for the G3. My main reasons for doing so would be the DIGIC processor and the 4X zoom lens.
So I hope this helped somewhat in your decision making!
What I liked:
Excellent photo quality in most situations
Amazing expandability in terms of lenses, flashes
Super fast performance
4X zoom a nice change from the usual 3X zooms
Impressive movie, playback modes
Has an AF illuminator lamp
Tons of manual controls
FlexiZone focusing system lets you focus on any area of frame
Great software bundle
What I didn't care for:
Redeye worse than expected (even with repeated tests)
Strange chromatic aberrations (rare, but annoying)
Images not as sharp as the very best 4/5 Megapixel cameras
Diopter correction knob difficult to operate
Lens blocks view from optical viewfinder at wide angles

Repair Your Canon SD Series Lens Covers Yourself And Save! by Thomas Drayton

Many people have asked about repairing their front covers/flaps on their Canon PowerShot SD series cameras, so I've written up some instructions. Please let others know if you found this article helpful.
The barrier kit on most Canon PowerShot SD series cameras is a little tricky but not impossible to replace yourself. All you need is some patience, a steady hand and a small tipped screwdriver. We use dental picks, they work great!
To start, you will need to turn on the camera and extend the lens, then open the battery door to turn off the camera and keep the lens out. This allows you to easily work on the lens barrier assembly.
The first part that goes in is the barrel drive ring; it has a small part sticking down into the lens. Some cameras don't have one, so if there isn't one in your kit then your camera doesn't need it. Make sure it rotates slightly once it has been inserted, otherwise its not in properly and will jam the lens.
Next are the springs and flaps. Put one spring on each of the flaps, there are little tabs to hold them on. They are TINY, they are hard to hold and if you drop it... lets just say DON'T drop it on the carpet, ok? We do have just the springs available for purchase, but please try not to lose them.
Gently put the flap in the hole with the spring laying towards the post that the free end will mount on; then with something with a very small tip (we use dental picks!) gently grab the loop of the spring and stick it on its post.
Do this with the flaps in the open position, they will stay in place if you get them seated properly. If everything pops off, just start again. Try not to stretch out the springs, they need to remain tight for the assembly to work properly.
Then gently put on the barrier cover, it's a flat plastic ring. There are tabs on the barrier cover, they match up with little slots on the lens and it locks into place. Be gentle, don't force anything too hard or you will break it and the parts will not hold it place.
Now it's time to test your skills! Put in the battery (cross your fingers) and press the power button! Did it work? Did it go *SPROING!* and all the parts flew across the room? Yeah I hope not, but I?ve been there myself so you?re not alone.
Once you have it working smoothly:
Next put the dual sided tape on the barrier cover. VERY IMPORTANT: Peel the tape off the yellow backing paper but DO NOT remove the paper from the side that is cut to match the shape of the tape!! Removing the small paper part will cause the tape to fold up on itself and stick together. Bye bye tape!
The tabs fold over the edge, don't let them stick out or the lens cover won't fit and the lens will jam. The tape lines up with one tab at about the 11 o'clock position, then fold the tabs over and press them in so they don't stick out.
Now put on your chrome or black lens cap, line up the cap with the small indentation at the bottom, you'll see how it goes on easily.
Fire up the camera again and admire your handywork! Congratulations you repaired your camera yourself for $20 and the good old Geek Squad told you it would be $200 and take 3-4 weeks to repair.
Hmm... I think I'm seeing the beginning of something big here! =)

CANON DIGITAL CAMERA: EXPRESS, SHOOT AND SHARE by Otello Zorina

Canon is well known across the country as an imaging equipment and information systems. Their many products include copiers, printers, lenses, camcorders, semiconductors among others, and of course Canon digital cameras.
The latest high end canon digital camera is the PowerShot S2 IS. This is a 5.0 mega pixel Canon digital camera that features a 12x optical zoom and a 4x digital zoom. This baby is furnished with Optical Image Stabilizer (that is what the IS in S2 IS stands for) that eliminates camera shakes for people who have shaky hands or for taking camera shots. The UD lens found in this canon digital camera provide amazing color accuracy throughout the whole zoom area.
As with many digital cameras nowadays, this certain canon digital camera can record moving pictures. Now with another first, the S2 allows you to record moving pictures, and there no use for missing a perfect image incorporated with that moving picture. With the Movie Snap feature, just snap away when you see that perfect image, and it will be saved in your canon digital camera along with the recorded video.
This canon digital camera is also equipped with the DIGIC II Image processor that is designed to increase processing speed and image quality. It instantly says that with the DIGIC II, your canon digital camera has faster start-up time, playback and auto focus while giving your images the absolute brilliance.
The S2 also support USB 2.0 Hi-speed standard, so you will always have the easiest time transferring your files to and from your computer. With the USB 2.0, you can take advantage of your super hi-speed SD card.
This canon digital camera is also supplied with a 1.8 inch LCD power saving and fold out screen that's 115,000 pixel resolution. S2 shoots at 30 frames per second; this shooting rate can be reduced when taking pictures in night display, to give you the brightness that you need when taking pictures.
On the other hand, the latest point and shoot canon digital camera is the PowerShot SD500 and the PowerShot SD400.
The SD500 is the first 7.1 mega pixel canon digital camera that gives amazing images and absolutely to die for details. It has a 3x optical zoom that enables close up shooting with a 37-111mm equivalent with a 35mm film camera. This is one of the new perpetual curve design for a canon digital camera that fits the hands perfectly.
Sporting a very slim design, you would marvel at its 2.0 inch LCD that gives easier frame and play back use.
This baby is also equipped with the same DIGIC II Image Processor found in canon digital cameras that gives you amazing features. Also USB 2.0 compatible and works with the same high-speed SD card.
Even better than most digital cameras out there, this gadget can shoot moving images to up to 60 frames per second- perfect for moving objects (especially in sports) and a 30 frames per second for shooting still images. Furnished with scene modes like portrait (blurs the background and focuses on your subject), foliage (perfect for foliage, greenery or blossoms), beach (sunny shots without the dark faces), underwater (reduced background scatter. Tip: you can always buy waterproof case for shooting underwater images), fireworks, night snapshot, kids and pets, indoor, snow and digital macro (larger than life images).
This canon digital camera even enables you to customize and correct as you shoot. With modes like lightening skin tones, positive film, darker skin tones and others, you can never go wrong with using a canon digital camera.

Choosing the Best Canon Point and Shoot Camera for Your Needs by Clayton Lahti

While it hardly compares to buying a house or a car, selecting a new digital camera is a relatively significant decision. Prices for Canon point and shoot cameras range anywhere from $100 to $500 or more, so we are talking about a bit of an investment. With so many to choose from, however, how do you choose?
The key is to focus on three things: your level of experience, what type of photos you plan on taking, and of course, your budget.
Has the shutterbug bitten you just recently, are you a seasoned photographer, or do you fall somewhere in between? This is an important factor to consider in select your new Canon.
If you have a lot of experience and like to be in control, then a model like the PowerShot SX10 IS would be an ideal choice, as it features a ton of manual options, including the ability to adjust shutter speed, aperture, white balance ... you name it. And its 20x zoom lens provides yet another outlet for you to be creative. If this is a bit beyond your budget, however, all but the most inexpensive Canon point and shoot cameras have at least some of these manual capabilities.
At the other end of the spectrum, selecting the best Canon point and shoot camera for a beginner is extremely easy, as virtually all of them provide a multitude of automatic settings that make taking great pictures a breeze. All of them also feature optical image stabilization, which assists in producing sharp photos even if the camera is jiggled a bit. Finally, the buttons and controls on Canons are inevitably very simple and easy to use. For someone just starting out in digital photography, selecting a specific model will hinge more on price and what they plan to use it for.
Which brings us to the next question: what type of pictures do you intend to take, and how often?
Will you only be snapping photos on vacation or at family events? A very functional, but less expensive choice like the PowerShot SX110 IS might be a good choice, featuring a 10x zoom lens. Do you want something that will fit easily into your back pocket? Check out the PowerShot SD1200 IS, weighing in at a tiny 4.2 ounces. Both have a nice mix of automated and manual features and produce the high image quality that Canon is famous for.
On the other hand, are you an avid photographer who spends much of your free time experimenting and getting creative? The SX10 is likely your best choice, but if you are on a tight budget, you can still make a lot of manual setting adjustments with the SX110, and still have the flexibility of the 10x zoom.
Finally, inevitably, you end up have to look at the price. How much you can afford to spend is up to you to determine, of course, but with so many choices, even a more advanced enthusiast who is strapped financially should be able to find a Canon point and shoot camera that meets most of his needs without giving up a lot. The SX110 and SD1200, for instance, are very similarly priced toward the more affordable end of the spectrum. As for the beginner, as mentioned before, all Canons have the ability to take beautiful pictures in fully automatic mode.
So, before shopping for a camera, give some thought to where you are on the digital photography learning curve, how often and where you intend to use your new "toy", and how much you can afford to fork over. Once you've done this, choosing the best Canon point and shoot camera for your needs should be a piece of cake.

Canon PowerShot SD950 IS Digital Camera: Is Absolutely Superb. by Christopher West

Image quality is great. It is easy to use and feels solid. Images were crisp and generally well exposed and while the housing feels as durable as a solid piece of metal, the lightweight pocket cam is very light weight. The LCD was visible even in bright sunlight and focus was fast in all situations with a negligible shutter delay after focus was established. Images can be corrected manually while viewing photos on the LCD screen. Canon's new Face Detection Technology makes for even easier picture taking moments.
Digital cameras have undergone much advancement in a short period of time and Canon has responded by giving the PowerShot SD950 IS high quality features at a base price. This is a compact camera working with 8.0 Megapixels. Digital camera prices fell quickly so the only thing I don't like is the premium price I paid to get this camera earlier. If you can wait a little bit get it when the price comes down further.
Movie Mode is strictly a 4:3 aspect ratio as I said. The Canon PowerShot SD950 IS Digital Camera can shoot 1,024 x 768 movies at 15 frames per second which is a good enough frame rate and saves card space. Moving your finger around the touch dial brings up a screen overlay of the touch dial layout with a larger display of a control. I didn't find the Touch Dial useful however, and turned off the screen overlay after a few hours of use.
Shutter lag ranged from about one half of a second to one and a half seconds depending on the amount of contrast in the scene. Overall, the SD950 is slightly slower than its lower end cousin the SD870. Shutter delay is negligible while the wait between one full resolution JPEG. The camera is quick to power up with a wait of just a couple of seconds while the rear screen comes to life and the lens barrel fully extends from storage to the body. That will mimic bright and dim shooting conditions respectively. In continuous shooting mode, the SD950 IS fell just short of its fancier cousin the G9, clocking an average of 1.6 frames per second regardless of image size.
Price is a little expensive, but well worth it I think.

That's why Canon included its advanced Motion Detection Technology in the PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital Elph. This sophisticated feature works in the background to instantly evaluate how fast your subject is moving. Then it automatically selects and sets the optimal exposure and ISO settings to keep everything looking sharp and clear. When you need higher ISOs for action-stopping shutter speeds, Motion Detection Technology provides it. But when no movement is detected, it allows lower ISOs for excellent color and detail. So whether you're shooting a bride walking down the aisle, a ballet recital or even a child's soccer game, you can relax and shoot with confidence knowing you've got the picture you intended...for more info visit

Customer Reviews Canon PowerShot A480 10 MP Digital Camera with 3.3x Optical Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD (Silver)From Canon

Great camera! I just received my camera today and I was impressed. It's so tiny and has so much in the way of capabilities. All I wanted it for was to take pictures of restaurants when I eat out (for Yelp). Without adjusting the white balance or anything, every picture has been pefect. I have three other Canon cameras: a G2 which cost me about $800 when new, a D60, and a 20D. All of them are too large to lug around with me, while the A480 goes in my shirt pocket. I uploaded some pictures, take a look.
Nice Camera with a small price tag. I have a canon digital SLR camera, and wanted to go on a hummer 4x4 extreme off road adventure. Rain was in the forecast and several days of rain on the trail already, taking the digital SLR was totally out of the question. I picked this nifty device based on the price, the batteries, storage on the SD card, and the 10mp really perked my interest. The gentleman at the camera shop showed me the easy access on/off button, and where the "press here for picture" button is located. 20 minutes after the purchase, I was in the hummer taking photos and within the hour, I was being bounced around, getting muddy water all over me, I was able to laugh and press the button to take pictures without problem. Ease of operation: I use my cameras in the auto mode, (the if SLR is for my wife), and the auto mode does work. I was able to view the pictures I took using the 2.5" view screen with ease. I did not even need the instruction manual. The batteries and memory card were easy to install too, without the need for instructions. The camera does boast a host of different shooting modes, but auto is all I use. Picture quality: Not a fine as my digital SLR camera, but the price difference is over 1000.00 dollars. Compared to my old 5mp camera, this camera does a very good job for the price. Image stabilization is WONDERFUL. I was trying to take picture of the hummer tires while we were in motion bouncing everywhere (the tire at times was in the air) and the pictures look almost as if the tire is still. You can read the manufacturer on the tire Battery life: After two days of use, the camera was still able to go. To save battery life, the LCD screen turn itself off and the followed by the camera (the auto shut off was annoying some times) Summary: The camera is very easy to operate, image stabilization works very well. Time from button press to picture taken is almost unnoticeable. Picture quality is pretty darn good. For the entry market, or for those looking for a good camera that won't break the bank, this maybe the camera you are looking for/
Far exceeded my expectations I wanted a small digital that would fit in my shirt pocket that used AA batteries and of course took good pictures. The Canon A480 far exceed my expectation. Out of the box it was so intuitive to use that I hardly looked at the manual. I took tons of pictures and they all came out great. There was a bad review here by someone who said there was a problem with "battery charging" all the time, however I noticed it once and that was it, and even then it was for just a couple of seconds. If you want an easy camera that does alot (the movies were great on this little guy) then this is the ticket.

DIGIC III image processor With DIGIC III, your images boast superior quality, the camera operates at top efficiency and battery life is enhanced. What’s more, DIGIC III enables Canon’s Face Detection Technology and Red-eye Correction to give you better, more true-to-life people shots. Simply press the Shutter Button halfway down, and the camera automatically pinpoints the faces in the scene and chooses the ideal focus point. The camera controls exposure settings and flash to keep every face looking bright and natural. Red-eye Correction can be handled in-camera, in two ways. The entirely new Red-eye Correction during shooting uses the Face Detection Technology to recognize and remove red-eye from flash images as they're taken, before the file is written to the memory card. It's also possible to correct red-eye during image playback, using simple settings in the A470's menu. iSAPS Technology is an entirely original scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the fast DIGIC III Image Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance. Red-eye Correction Red-eye correction provides three options for removing red-eye from subjects in flash pictures.
The new Red-eye Correction during shooting actually identifies and corrects red-eye in human subjects as pictures are taken.
The A470 can be set to automatically detect and correct red-eye during image playback.
The user can manually locate any red eyes in a scene during image playback on the LCD screen, and command the camera to remove them.

Customer Reviews Canon PowerShot A470 7MP Digital Camera with 3.4x Optical Zoom (Blue)From Canon

(Just an amateur here) For the list price ($129.00) I really couldn't find a better camera. I work in a photo processing lab, where I also deal with and sell cameras for most of the day, so before purchasing my own I did a lot of hands-on research playing with and reading about all the cameras that were within the price I wanted to spend. I'm still learning as far as all the fancy features, but if you're like me and just need a good camera for everyday type stuff, this one is perfect. With its 7.1 mega pixels, it takes really sharp pictures and what I really like is how fast the shutter is. There's virtually no delay between the time you focus the camera and go to snap the actual picture. That was my biggest problem with my old camera-- I'd go to focus in and then by the time I actually snapped the photo, the delay was so annoyingly long that the moment was lost. The LCD screen is a great size, not too large and not too small. At 2.5", you get a really good idea of what you're shooting, even without a viewfinder. The only complaint I have is that it's not as great outdoors in bright weather. The screen gets really washed out and makes it kind of difficult to get a good shot. This is fixable though, as they sell pop-up shade clips (about $10) you can attach to the camera so as to correct that. I haven't tried them personally, but heard they work really well. I also really like the size of the camera itself. A lot of people are attracted to the super slim tiny cameras you can fit in a pocket, but that didn't appeal to me. I wanted something I'd be comfortable holding, fit well in my hands, and didn't feel like I was going to drop it. Its like the perfect size for me, because it's still really compact but not so small that it gives me anxiety over dropping it/breaking something. Alternately, its not so big that I can't easily carry it around with me. I would consider this camera a step up from a lot of others in the price range. Along with the scene modes (which is pretty standard on most point and shoots anyway) it has a manual setting, which is fun to play around with and really easy to navigate. For someone like me who is still learning all the technical stuff it's a good first camera. You can customize a fair amount but its not overwhelming and hard to learn. At my job we are trained on what are the best selling points, features, etc, and whereas I take that into mind I also know that everyone is picky in their own way and some people care about certain features more than others. Personally I just wanted something to use on vacations, to take pictures of friends and I, my cats, etc. If you want something for fast action scenarios, sporting events and the like, you might want to skip this camera. It's only got the standard 3.4 optical zoom, which really is not that far, and even though it zooms farther digitally...it will get more blurry the further in you go. That is one thing Canon needs to improve upon-- a lot of their lower end models like this one have poor image stabilizing. Canon's face detection technology is pretty cool though. In Auto mode (and probably manual too, I'm not positive though) it actually locks onto a person's face and almost highlights it...like zooms just their face in so you can see if it's clearly focused before taking the pic. This is a feature you can turn on or off in the Menu settings. It throws you off a bit in relation to the rest of the photo, but once you get the hang of it it's really helpful (in group shots especially.) Bottom line - great deal for the price! You see a lot of Nikon's (Coolpix series) in the $89-129 price range, but in my experience this newer Canon definitely surpasses them. I had a Nikon Coolpix 5600 (probably about 2 yrs old now), and whereas it took beautifully sharp photos, the lag time was incredibly slow and that's what made me like this Canon better. Faster shutter times make all the difference! Canon's photo software is easier to navigate as well, with more custom settings to play around with when you want to edit/share your pictures on your computer. Most people are surprised to learn what kind of camera I have after they've seen the photos it takes. I just think its really nice that you can get something of this quality for such a low price. OH- And a note about the AA batteries for this Canon: Obviously if you use standard alkaline AA's your response time is going to be a lot slower. Investing in good quality rechargeables is more than worth the money, it makes all the difference. I myself prefer Energizer's Lithium batteries, the blue and silver ones, as oppose to the rechargeables...just because they are specially designed for high powered devices like digital cameras, and you don't have to mess around with a charger, or the whole rotating batteries in and out. I got a good couple months of use out of a set of two, while taking pictures frequently...on a trip, and even just in everyday daily use. It's about $5 for a two pack and $9 for 4.
A good entry-level camera These PowerShot "A" cameras are Canon's attempt to deliver the quality and features of its more expensive PowerShot "G" and PowerShot Pro "S" lines (such as full zoom lenses) at a budget price. The results are pretty good. (How do I know? Because I've actually gotten to use all of these cameras. I earn my living at Walt Disney World writing a travel guide, and nearly every day guests ask me to take photos of them with their own cameras, which most often are Canon PowerShots.) Here's my opinion of the top-selling "A" series cameras: 7TH PLACE: Featuring Canon's acclaimed Digic III processor, the 2007-model A560 includes the company's face-detection metering system and a decent red-eye removal. It's a nice camera, but a better value is the new A470 (see below). $150 list. 6TH PLACE: The A570IS is the same camera as the A560 but with optical image stabilization and the ability to shoot manually. $200 list. 5TH PLACE: You can do a lot with the sweet little A630. It's a 2006 model, but has a flip-out LCD panel and lots of manual controls. The shots I've seen from this model look great. Keep your ISO under 800 and you won't get any noise. $350 list. (Canon offers a 2007 version of this camera that I haven't had much experience with yet, the A650 IS. It also lists for $350.) 4TH PLACE: The 2008-model A580 is an A590IS (see 1st Place, below) without image stabilization and with semi-automatic instead of manual controls. $150 list. 3RD PLACE: The fully-loaded A720 IS has all the toys, including a 6x zoom (35mm film equivalent of 35-210mm), image stabilization, adjustable flash power and optional second-curtain flash. This last feature means you can make the flash fire at the end of a long exposure, instead of the beginning, so moving subjects streak into focus instead of out. A 2007 model. $200 list. 2ND PLACE: The 2008 entry-level A470 (the camera on this page) is great for kids or anyone just looking for a good basic camera. But frankly, it's better than basic. It includes Canon's face detection technology and has a zoom lens, 14 shooting modes and the ability to set exposure compensation, ISO and white balance manually. Plus it looks great with the color inserts. Everyone with this little camera always seems to be having fun. $130 list. 1ST PLACE: The A590IS is the A580 (see 4th Place, above) with image stabilization and with the option of full manual controls. For an extra $30 those features are well worth it. I bought this model for myself. $180 list.
Beautiful camera with one major shortcoming I was attracted to this camera as a new version of the A460, which was highly rated by PC World. It is indeed very simple to use with a large LCD display, much greater resolution than the A70 I bought five years ago, and uses a 2 GB memory chip. The drawback is that the camera has no view finder. You take a picture by looking at it in the LCD display. That works fine indoors, but outdoors the daylight washes out the display so that framing a picture is almost guesswork.Canon PowerShot A470 7MP Digital Camera with 3.4x Optical Zoom (Red)

Lens problem Like the AA batteries and size of camera, however, first day on a 2 week trip to Italy my camera lens would not retract when I shut the camera off. Made a terrible clunky sound and eventually I learned how to manually twist the lens so it would shut off and close! I guess you get what you pay for, but I am going to see if someone will fix it since I only had the camera a few weeks!
Disappointing... Disappointing product. Picture quality is worse than my old 5MP camera and the flash recharge is really annoying. My power button also kept getting pressed while in the in my purse and now the lens open/shut mechanism is messed up. Overall, a HUGE letdown by Canon.
I think it's just okay - not great. I'm used to using my Canon SLR and love the results, but I wanted a camera I could toss in my purse and take with me wherever w/out lugging my slr around my neck or in a bag. I have always been a canon fan, and prior to my SLR I had a powershot and love it! This one falls short of 'loving it' by a mile. It takes a LONG time for the flash to 'recharge' and the autofocus is slow. It shoots okay pics but does tend to e a bit grainy-looking but then I haven't really taken it out of the house in natural light or done much else other than indoor photos (son's bday), but I'm not exactly impressed with this particular point and shoot. . .now it may be an improvement from the powershot I had before, but it's been 3 or 4 years since I upgraded to the S3 IS and then the SLR so I'd have to search archived photos and compare. I do like the features it has - those are kinda neat and I'm looking forward to playing around and seeing what it can do. I guess with this camera being just a little over $100, you get what you pay for. Luckily my daughter (who is 10) has been wanting a dig. camera, so I'll probably just box this one up and let her have it for Christmas. I'll go buy the SX10 IS - I think it's more what I'm looking for, even though it isn't as small it is definately not as heavy and I LOVED the S3IS I used to have with awesome results - I'm sure that one won't disappoint me!

Love the little canons this is a wonderful little camera with video capabilities. just don't drop it in the sand at the beach.......not even once, like i did. This is the replacement for an older model which was excellent until the sand got in the lens.....then it couldn't move to focus....bummer. anyway don't even think twice these are great little cameras.
Nice Camera I bought this to replace an old Canon Powershot that stopped working. Camera arrived promptly and is easy to start using right away, especially if you've used a Canon in the past. Image quality is very good, particularly indoors or shooting subjects against a bright background. I think image quality of all of these point and shoots has improved a lot over the last couple of years. Small and light enough to drop in a shirt or pants pocket. Pretty good value for the money. I have no significant complaints so far.
Great Camera and fast shipping, good price. We are enjoying these cameras in our elementary school. Good quality pictures with minimum skills.
