Choosing the Best Canon Point and Shoot Camera for Your Needs by Clayton Lahti

While it hardly compares to buying a house or a car, selecting a new digital camera is a relatively significant decision. Prices for Canon point and shoot cameras range anywhere from $100 to $500 or more, so we are talking about a bit of an investment. With so many to choose from, however, how do you choose?
The key is to focus on three things: your level of experience, what type of photos you plan on taking, and of course, your budget.
Has the shutterbug bitten you just recently, are you a seasoned photographer, or do you fall somewhere in between? This is an important factor to consider in select your new Canon.
If you have a lot of experience and like to be in control, then a model like the PowerShot SX10 IS would be an ideal choice, as it features a ton of manual options, including the ability to adjust shutter speed, aperture, white balance ... you name it. And its 20x zoom lens provides yet another outlet for you to be creative. If this is a bit beyond your budget, however, all but the most inexpensive Canon point and shoot cameras have at least some of these manual capabilities.
At the other end of the spectrum, selecting the best Canon point and shoot camera for a beginner is extremely easy, as virtually all of them provide a multitude of automatic settings that make taking great pictures a breeze. All of them also feature optical image stabilization, which assists in producing sharp photos even if the camera is jiggled a bit. Finally, the buttons and controls on Canons are inevitably very simple and easy to use. For someone just starting out in digital photography, selecting a specific model will hinge more on price and what they plan to use it for.
Which brings us to the next question: what type of pictures do you intend to take, and how often?
Will you only be snapping photos on vacation or at family events? A very functional, but less expensive choice like the PowerShot SX110 IS might be a good choice, featuring a 10x zoom lens. Do you want something that will fit easily into your back pocket? Check out the PowerShot SD1200 IS, weighing in at a tiny 4.2 ounces. Both have a nice mix of automated and manual features and produce the high image quality that Canon is famous for.
On the other hand, are you an avid photographer who spends much of your free time experimenting and getting creative? The SX10 is likely your best choice, but if you are on a tight budget, you can still make a lot of manual setting adjustments with the SX110, and still have the flexibility of the 10x zoom.
Finally, inevitably, you end up have to look at the price. How much you can afford to spend is up to you to determine, of course, but with so many choices, even a more advanced enthusiast who is strapped financially should be able to find a Canon point and shoot camera that meets most of his needs without giving up a lot. The SX110 and SD1200, for instance, are very similarly priced toward the more affordable end of the spectrum. As for the beginner, as mentioned before, all Canons have the ability to take beautiful pictures in fully automatic mode.
So, before shopping for a camera, give some thought to where you are on the digital photography learning curve, how often and where you intend to use your new "toy", and how much you can afford to fork over. Once you've done this, choosing the best Canon point and shoot camera for your needs should be a piece of cake.

Canon PowerShot SD950 IS Digital Camera: Is Absolutely Superb. by Christopher West

Image quality is great. It is easy to use and feels solid. Images were crisp and generally well exposed and while the housing feels as durable as a solid piece of metal, the lightweight pocket cam is very light weight. The LCD was visible even in bright sunlight and focus was fast in all situations with a negligible shutter delay after focus was established. Images can be corrected manually while viewing photos on the LCD screen. Canon's new Face Detection Technology makes for even easier picture taking moments.
Digital cameras have undergone much advancement in a short period of time and Canon has responded by giving the PowerShot SD950 IS high quality features at a base price. This is a compact camera working with 8.0 Megapixels. Digital camera prices fell quickly so the only thing I don't like is the premium price I paid to get this camera earlier. If you can wait a little bit get it when the price comes down further.
Movie Mode is strictly a 4:3 aspect ratio as I said. The Canon PowerShot SD950 IS Digital Camera can shoot 1,024 x 768 movies at 15 frames per second which is a good enough frame rate and saves card space. Moving your finger around the touch dial brings up a screen overlay of the touch dial layout with a larger display of a control. I didn't find the Touch Dial useful however, and turned off the screen overlay after a few hours of use.
Shutter lag ranged from about one half of a second to one and a half seconds depending on the amount of contrast in the scene. Overall, the SD950 is slightly slower than its lower end cousin the SD870. Shutter delay is negligible while the wait between one full resolution JPEG. The camera is quick to power up with a wait of just a couple of seconds while the rear screen comes to life and the lens barrel fully extends from storage to the body. That will mimic bright and dim shooting conditions respectively. In continuous shooting mode, the SD950 IS fell just short of its fancier cousin the G9, clocking an average of 1.6 frames per second regardless of image size.
Price is a little expensive, but well worth it I think.

Canon PowerShot SD1100IS 8MP Digital Camera With 8.0-megapixel technology at its heart, the PowerShot SD1100IS Digital Elph brings you high-resolution images that maintain their sharpness and vivid impact even when they're enlarged and cropped. The 3x optical zoom is a clear winner when it comes to getting up close and personal. And Canon's invaluable Optical Image Stabilizer reduces the blur of camera movement, even in tricky, low-light situations. 2. Enhanced Canon Face Detection Technology Canon's powerful Face Detection Technology delivers even better results with the new SD1100IS Digital Elph. The Face Detection Technology continues to recognize faces in a scene, and concentrate exposure (daylight or flash) and focus upon them. Face Select and Track lets the SD1100 IS Digital Elph user highlight one face among several in a scene, and the camera concentrates on that person, even as they move around the scene. Face Detection Technology is a powerful contributing factor in Canon's new Motion Detection Technology. 3. Motion Detection Technology automatically reduces blur Life doesn't stand still for picture-taking. That's why Canon included its advanced Motion Detection Technology in the PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital Elph. This sophisticated feature works in the background to instantly evaluate how fast your subject is moving. Then it automatically selects and sets the optimal exposure and ISO settings to keep everything looking sharp and clear. When you need higher ISOs for action-stopping shutter speeds, Motion Detection Technology provides it. But when no movement is detected, it allows lower ISOs for excellent color and detail. So whether you're shooting a bride walking down the aisle, a ballet recital or even a child's soccer game, you can relax and shoot with confidence knowing you've got the picture you intended...for more info visit

Customer Reviews Canon PowerShot A480 10 MP Digital Camera with 3.3x Optical Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD (Silver)From Canon

Great camera! I just received my camera today and I was impressed. It's so tiny and has so much in the way of capabilities. All I wanted it for was to take pictures of restaurants when I eat out (for Yelp). Without adjusting the white balance or anything, every picture has been pefect. I have three other Canon cameras: a G2 which cost me about $800 when new, a D60, and a 20D. All of them are too large to lug around with me, while the A480 goes in my shirt pocket. I uploaded some pictures, take a look.
Nice Camera with a small price tag. I have a canon digital SLR camera, and wanted to go on a hummer 4x4 extreme off road adventure. Rain was in the forecast and several days of rain on the trail already, taking the digital SLR was totally out of the question. I picked this nifty device based on the price, the batteries, storage on the SD card, and the 10mp really perked my interest. The gentleman at the camera shop showed me the easy access on/off button, and where the "press here for picture" button is located. 20 minutes after the purchase, I was in the hummer taking photos and within the hour, I was being bounced around, getting muddy water all over me, I was able to laugh and press the button to take pictures without problem. Ease of operation: I use my cameras in the auto mode, (the if SLR is for my wife), and the auto mode does work. I was able to view the pictures I took using the 2.5" view screen with ease. I did not even need the instruction manual. The batteries and memory card were easy to install too, without the need for instructions. The camera does boast a host of different shooting modes, but auto is all I use. Picture quality: Not a fine as my digital SLR camera, but the price difference is over 1000.00 dollars. Compared to my old 5mp camera, this camera does a very good job for the price. Image stabilization is WONDERFUL. I was trying to take picture of the hummer tires while we were in motion bouncing everywhere (the tire at times was in the air) and the pictures look almost as if the tire is still. You can read the manufacturer on the tire Battery life: After two days of use, the camera was still able to go. To save battery life, the LCD screen turn itself off and the followed by the camera (the auto shut off was annoying some times) Summary: The camera is very easy to operate, image stabilization works very well. Time from button press to picture taken is almost unnoticeable. Picture quality is pretty darn good. For the entry market, or for those looking for a good camera that won't break the bank, this maybe the camera you are looking for/
Far exceeded my expectations I wanted a small digital that would fit in my shirt pocket that used AA batteries and of course took good pictures. The Canon A480 far exceed my expectation. Out of the box it was so intuitive to use that I hardly looked at the manual. I took tons of pictures and they all came out great. There was a bad review here by someone who said there was a problem with "battery charging" all the time, however I noticed it once and that was it, and even then it was for just a couple of seconds. If you want an easy camera that does alot (the movies were great on this little guy) then this is the ticket.
